This course focuses on the interplay between the data generation process, the access mechanisms, and the importance of the content of the data for the specific IoT application. Following a problem-based learning (PBL) approach, the participants will acquire the necessary theoretical basis and design principles of wireless communications for the IoT as well as hands-on experience to the implementation of a smart energy-efficient solution in real cellular IoT devices.

After the course, the participant will be proficient in:

• The theoretical basis and design principles of wireless communication protocols and IoT architectures.
• Communication, computation, and energy consumption models for IoT
• Programming and implementing data collection and transmission mechanisms in real cellular IoT devices.
• The use of data-driven methods to maximize the efficiency of IoT applications.

Furthermore, the participant will acquire hands-on experience on:

• Python programming and data analytics in embedded platforms
• MQTT network protocol configuration and implementation
• Sensor configuration and calibration/validation

The course bridges the gap between theory and implementation by providing an engineering problem, along with the theoretical and hands-on competences to achieve an efficient solution to it. Hence, it is organized into both theoretical lectures and hands-on sessions. The theoretical lectures provide the basic knowledge to achieve an effective design of the solution to the problem of achieving effective and energy-efficient data collection and transmission. The hands-on sessions provide the competences to implement and evaluate the performance of the designed solution through close collaboration between the participants and lecturers.

All instruction will be conducted in English.

Israel Leyva-Mayorga (male) is an Associate Professor at the Connectivity Section (CNT) of the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University (AAU), Denmark. He received the B.Sc. degree in telematics engineering and the M.Sc. degree (Hons.) in mobile computing systems from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), Mexico, in 2012 and 2014, respectively, and the Ph.D. in telecommunications (Cum laude) from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain, in 2018. He serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Wireless Communications Letters.

Jimmy Jessen Nielsen (male) is an Associate Professor at the Connectivity Section (CNT) at the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University (AAU). Also, he is the Director of the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design at AAU. He obtained his M.Sc. from the Department of Electronic Systems, AAU, in 2007 and his Ph.D. in Wireless Communications from AAU in 2011. His research interests are on ultra-reliable communication and low latency communication (URLLC), internet of things (IoT) protocols, and drone communications.

Computer, electronics, robotics, and other engineers across various industries that use Internet of Things sensing and communication.

Ideal participants possess basic knowledge of programming and are familiar with programming languages, preferably Python, as well as communication protocols, computer architectures and networks.

A reading package will be provided before the course, covering basic aspects of wireless communications and IoT use cases and applications as well as a quick guide to Python programming.

The course certificate provides the participants with documentation of a completed course at AAU with Associate Professor Israel Leyva-Mayorga and Associate Professor Jimmy Jessen Nielsen.
