AAU Professor elected president for International Commission for Acoustics

The world’s acoustical societies have elected Professor Dorte Hammershøi as president for 2022-2025

Professor Dorte Hammershøi can now attribute yet another title to her name and an already impressive resume. This time as president of the ICA, and thus she reinforces a historically strong Danish position within the fields of acoustics.

“I was happy and surprised to be nominated and I’m very honored that a majority have such great a confidence in my ability to create consensus and momentum for the work of the ICA. I was a regular member 2012-2019 and I have profound respect for the work of previous presidents and other executive officers. In recent years, scientific interaction between colleagues has changed and we need to find a new normal that best serve scientists and society at large on the longer run,” says the newly appointed President of ICA, Dorte Hammershøi.

ICA is an organisation consisting of acoustical societies from countries all over the world. The purpose of the ICA is to promote international development and collaboration in all fields of acoustics including research, development, education, and standardisation. Every third year the organization hosts the international congress where technical research is presented and discussed.

Dorte Hammershøi was elected at the general assembly during the recent congress in Korea. Only two people are nominated for presidency of the committee consisting of 15 members with global representation.

The election of Dorte Hammershøi further supports Denmark’s strong position in sound and acoustics and enforces an already solid and innovative industry in acoustics with products such as measuring instruments, microphones, audio equipment and hearing aids with examples like Hottinger Brüel & Kjær, Bang og Olufsen, Widex-Sivantos Audiologies, Oticon and GN Hearing.

“I hope that my work for the ICA can contribute to a positive development for companies and organisations that develop technical solutions to the societal challenges we face in the field of acoustics. Noise is a health risk and thus we need to find environmentally friendly solutions for our urban space among other for the green energy solutions. We also need to find healthy listening lifestyles which prevents hearing damage and alleviate natural hearing losses. Timely intervention has economic benefits to society as well as the individual,” the professor says.

In recent years Dorte Hammershøi has primarily worked in with the risks of hearing damage related to use of headphones, technical audiological methods for early diagnostics, and methods in the field of hearing-aid treatments.

Dorte Hammershøi was nominated by the Danish Acoustical Society, which is the Danish member of the ICA.
