“Radio Propagation for Massive-MIMO and Millimeter-wave Mobile Communication Systems”

The development of fifth generation (5G) mobile communication has lead research towards
different technologies and frequencies to deliver the generational leap in connectivity and data
capacity. The less utilized spectrum above 6 GHz is researched for use in high data rate mobile communication as well as Massive-MIMO, where tens- or hundreds of base station antennas serve multiple users in the same time-frequency resource. The new channels and associated technologies have not been used previously for cellular communication and require extensive research and characterization of the propagation aspects for efficient modelling and development of these systems.

Two indoor measurement campaigns are designed to investigate ray-tracing accuracy in
frequencies of 28-30 GHz. Ray tracing assisted beamforming is proposed to reduce or eliminate the beam scanning procedure by predicting the beamforming directions in simulations. A feasibility study of ray-tracing assisted beamforming is done based on the two indoor measurements at 28-30 GHz, and is found to be reliable, as simulations are an excellent match with the measured channels.

Widely used channel models do not include some of the propagation aspects that become more pronounced for massive-MIMO propagation like non-stationarity, spatial consistency, and
near-field. Two large measurement campaigns are designed, an indoor stadium scenario and an outdoor university campus scenario, to characterize the massive-MIMO propagation channels. The findings indicate some areas in which channel models can be improved for more realistic modeling and development of systems for multi-user scenarios.
