The objective for my task in VIRTUOSO project is to obtain knowledge and design experience on the key techniques of mm-wave phased array antennas for fifth next generation (5G) mobile terminals. One key feature of 5G systems is the use of the millimeter bands along with highly smart antennas with beam forming ability at both the mobile device and base station. The usage of millimeter-wave spectrum will change the design of antennas in 5G cellular systems. Smaller antennas can be used at millimeter frequencies to give the required gain overcoming attenuation effects.
The challenges, benefits and approaches associated with antenna arrays at mm-wave frequency bands for future 5G cellular devices will be evaluated.
